The article deals with one of the promising directions for the introduction of renewable energy sources – the use of wind power plants. Along with powerful wind power plants that work on wind energy installations with a horizontal axis of rotation, but for which special wind conditions are required, it is advisable to use wind turbines with a vertical axis of rotation that work at low wind speeds and different wind directions. Feasibility of using wind energy installations with a vertical axis of rotation on technologically disturbed lands in mining regions was studied. The practice of using windmills, despite the great benefits of their use, has significant drawbacks. This problem consists in deriving large plots of land for use and having an impact on the surrounding environment. This, in turn, leads to negative consequences for the ecology of these regions. In connection with this, the idea of using wind energy installations on land plots that have been decommissioned was born. These include sparsely populated regions, wastelands, and decommissioned plots of land on which the facilities of mining enterprises are located. It has been proven that the placement of wind power plants with a vertical axis of rotation of medium power on overburden dumps has its own characteristics. For most of the territory of Ukraine, the average wind speed is 3-5 m/s, so the use of wind turbines with a vertical axis of rotation is more appropriate. For use, vertical axial wind energy installations with the use of a support bearing, which uses the principle of magnetic levitation, are recommended. This makes vertical axis wind turbines the most efficient. The ecological advantages of using wind energy installations with a vertical axis of rotation for Ukraine are also considered. Wind energy installations with a vertical axis of rotation do not require large areas for their location, which makes their use more expedient.
